Delta-8 THC, a lesser-known variation of Delta-9 THC, that is found in hemp plants is slowly gaining popularity. Research into both Delta-8 and Delta-10 is ramping up rapidly and new market opportunities for their use being considered.  This session will focus on a discussion about exposures related to these and other up-and-coming cannabinoids.

Michael Brown

Michael Brown joined Golden Bear Insurance Company in 2002, as a property underwriter.  His education to date includes three years at Cal State Fresno, with a major in Criminology.  Since joining Golden Bear Insurance Company, he has completed the AINS designation in General Insurance, the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter program (CPCU, class of 2007), the Certified Catastrophe Risk Analyst (CCRA) designation from Risk Management Solutions, Inc., as well as the Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designation from the International Risk Management Institute, the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ALSI) designation, the Associate in Commercial Underwriting Management (AU-M) designation, the Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designation,  the Associate in Information Technology (AIT) designation, and the Associate in Enterprise-Wide Risk Management (ARM-E) designation through the Institutes, and has successfully completed the standards of training in Evaluating Earthquake Damage as required by the California Department of Insurance for earthquake claims adjusting.  Michael has written articles related to property catastrophe insurance for Risk Management magazine and WIN magazine, has been interviewed for articles in Insurance Business, Rough Notes, and Insurance Journal, and was named a 2016 Risk Management All-Star by Risk and Insurance magazine; and Insurance Business America magazine named him one of the Hot 100 insurance professionals for 2019.

Eric is a Senior Vice President of Underwriting at Topsail Re.   He has more than 25 years of experience in primary and reinsurance underwriting operations.   Eric started his career as a personal lines automobile underwriting manager for American Ambassador Insurance Company.   He transitioned over to commercial lines and went on to become an commercial lines underwriting manager for Safeco Insurance Company.   Eric started his reinsurance career with SCOR Reinsurance.   He was an integral member of a specialty lines unit at Munich Re and before joining Topsail Re, was a Director at Arch Reinsurance Company.   Eric’s reinsurance responsibilities included marketing, underwriting and account management for national, regional, specialty and niche insurance companies.   Eric earned his Bachelor of Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and holds six insurance designations.   These include CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), ARe (Associate in Reinsurance), AU (Associate in Underwriting), ARM (Associate in Risk Management), PFMM (Professional Farm Mutual Manager) and AFIS (Agricultural Farm Insurance Specialist).   He was president of the Chicago NW CPCU chapter, a current member of the CPCU reinsurance interest group, contributor to industry publications and an advocate of insurance education.   Finally, Eric is an active board member of a mutual insurance company. 




Justin Moriconi, Esquire
Mariconi Flowers Ltd.


Justin is a thought-leader in the adult-use and medical cannabis space having formed Moriconi Flowers Ltd. in 2016 after practice at large law firms.  He is Co-Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association Medical Marijuana and Hemp Committee, having won the Business Law Section committee of the year in 2017 for his educational work in regulated cannabis.  Building on almost 20 years in litigation, insurance defense, and regulated industries, his current practice focuses on regulated cannabis and hemp permitting, compliance, investment analysis, capital raising, and related ancillary cannabis legal services.  Moriconi Flowers formed, secured permitting, opened, and managed the first medical cannabis dispensary in Philadelphia and continues to handle compliance for many independent and multi-state organization dispensaries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It also handles new permit/license application writing, and regulatory consulting all over the United States. Justin also formed and sat as the managing member and chief compliance officer for a Pennsylvania grower/processor, which was sold to a large multi-state operator in 2020.








Peter Murphy
American Fiber Co. | SVP, Regulatory Affairs


Peter S. Murphy, Esq. currently serves as Senior Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for American Fiber Company, a multi-state cannabis operator.  Prior to joining American Fiber, Murphy was a partner and co-chair of the Regulated Substances practice group for Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, an Am Law 200 law firm headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In that role, Murphy was responsible for drafting license applications and providing regulatory counsel for cannabis businesses from formation to operations.  At American Fiber, Murphy oversees the company’s licensing and compliance functions across multiple states and provides strategic guidance for its continued growth.  Murphy resides in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
