Society President Featured in Two Industry Publications
James L. Britt, CPCU, the Society’s 2007-2008 president, was featured in two insurance industry trade publications in April. He was quoted extensively in “The Main Ingredients,” which appeared in the April 15 issue of Risk and Insurance magazine. The article describes the types of people who become underwriters. Britt also co-authored an article with Daniel J. Pliszka on “Career Development: How Do I Get Where I Want to Go?” The article, published in the April issue of Public Risk magazine, addresses the opportunities for career advancement in light of the impending “brain drain” and labor shortages on the horizon.

VITAL INDUSTRY ISSUES
Product Recall Litigation: The Case of Merck

Recently, our society has witnessed an alarming increase in the number and magnitude of recalled products. Product manufacturers and distributors in the United States must deal with the realities and aftermath of mass product recalls. In the May CPCU eJournal article “Mass Tort Litigation: The Case of Merck,” Karen Epermanis, Ph.D.; Raul A. Martinez; and Brenda Wells, Ph.D., CPCU, AAI, describe Merck’s approach to the Vioxx recall and resulting litigation, and discuss some of the litigation issues surrounding mass tort litigation. Read it today, and subscribe to the CPCU eJournal reminder service to receive a monthly e-mail with a direct link to the latest issue.

CPCU: Spread the Word!

WE’RE “SPREADING THE WORD!”
May Visibility Spotlight Winner “Spreads the Word!” on AIG Intranet
Bart Shachnow, CPCU, CFP, CLU, ChFC
, associate director of the Broker Outreach Program for the AIG Insurance School, recently wrote an article about the CPCU designation for AIG’s intranet, which reaches employees around the world. Shachnow has also developed several tactics to increase awareness and interest in the CPCU designation. Response to these visibility efforts has exceeded expectations. “Our Atlanta office ran an informational program on designations with little advance notice and planning, and 40 people still showed up. Clearly there is an interest here; we need to respond to that interest and need for support effectively,” he said. Read more in the May Visibility Spotlight. In recognition for his “Spread the Word!” efforts, Shachnow will receive a business card holder with the CPCU Society logo.

Get the recognition you deserve! To be considered for the Visibility Spotlight, send us an e-mail with details on how you “Spread the Word!” Or send a submission through any of the online feedback tools.
