The CPCU Society’s 2009 Leadership Summit drew nearly 350 attendees. In addition, 34 chapters sponsored events at the Summit.

The Summit, held on April 21–25, in Phoenix, Ariz., included the Board of Governors’ spring meeting, CPCU Society Center for Leadership courses and Volunteer Leader Workshops. Many of the Society’s current and incoming volunteers were on hand to conduct Society business and gain new insights into motivating peers.

Special events included a breakfast meeting, three leadership luncheons and two receptions. Luncheon speakers included new designee Rachel McFarland, CPCU, director, State Farm; C. Ronald Williams, executive director, Arizona Insurance Council; and New York Chapter president Bart Shachnow, CPCU, CLU, ChFC, sales performance director, Zurich North America.


Houston Chapter Wins Award
Congratulations to the Houston Chapter, which won the Society’s 2009 Chapter Ethics Award for its creativity in celebrating Ethics Awareness Month in March. The chapter received $100 and a commemorative certificate on April 24 at the Leadership Summit.

For its Ethics Awareness Month activity, the Houston Chapter held a combined meeting with the Risk and Insurance Management Society’s Houston Chapter. An attorney for a Houston, Texas, law firm presented a one-hour program using a “Family Feud” game show format. Read more about the chapter’s program.

Marvin Kelly, CPCU, MBA, 2008–2009 CPCU Society president and chairman, presented the Chapter Ethics Award to the Houston Chapter's incoming president-elect, Linda Berryman, CPCU.


Leadership Instructor Honored

The CPCU-Loman Education Foundation presented the fourth annual Richard A. Gerrond Memorial Award to James G. Swan, CPCU, on April 24 at the Leadership Summit.

Swan is a graduate of Eastern Montana College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He is currently an auto physical damage training consultant for The Hartford, where he has held various positions. He earned his CPCU designation in 1995 and also holds the AIC, AIS and AIM designations. He is active in teaching INS, AIC and CPCU classes.

The Richard A. Gerrond Memorial Award honors an outstanding volunteer connected with the CPCU Society Center for Leadership. The award was created in memory of Richard A. Gerrond, CPCU, CIC, a dedicated instructor and Society governor, who passed away in January 2005.

Millicent W. Workman, CPCU, CPIW, AU, Loman Foundation vice chair, presented the Richard A. Gerrond Memorial Award to James G. Swan, CPCU.
