In the words of Pulitzer Prize-winning African-American poet Gwendolyn Brooks, "We are each other's business; we are each other's harvest; we are each other's magnitude and bond." During this general session, our panelists will share stories of change, challenge and growth and how these experiences shaped their personal and professional life journeys. The session will close with audience questions and perspectives.

Biographies

Cindy De Armond is a partner in the Supply Chain Management Practice of IBM’s Financial Services Business Consulting Services for Insurance. This practice is responsible for providing insurance industry expertise and delivery excellence. De Armond is the core insurance business lead and subject matter expert for policy administration and underwriting.  She has more than 18 years’ experience in the insurance industry and has operated in a wide variety of roles. Most recently, De Armond led the development and delivery of IBM’s Core Insurance Solutions.           

Gary A. Hernandez, J.D.,  a partner at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, practices insurance regulatory and administrative law. He handles state regulatory compliance, company and agency formation, and regulatory approval and administrative law matters on behalf of insurers and holding companies. Hernandez also is highly experienced in insurance insolvency proceedings and complex insurance and reinsurance matters. Formerly, he served as the deputy insurance commissioner and chief of enforcement in charge of insurer enforcement and market conduct, fraud investigations and management of all failed insurers in California.            

Annette R. Martinez, CLU, ChFC, is vice president, operations, of human resources at State Farm Corporate Headquarters in Bloomington, Ill. She joined State Farm in 1988 as a health underwriter in Greeley, Colo. Martinez moved to personnel administration in 1992 and to human resources in 1996. After a number of promotions, she became assistant vice president, diversity, in corporate human resources in 2002 and a leadership development associate in regional office administration in 2005. Martinez became an executive assistant in 2007 and assumed her current role in 2009. 

Colbert M. Matsumoto, J.D., is the chairman and CEO of Island Insurance Company Ltd., a multiline property-casualty underwriter doing business since 1939. Prior to assuming his current position at Island Insurance, he practiced law for more than 20 years. Matsumoto has been actively involved with diversity-related issues through his leadership roles and membership in numerous community organizations. Matsumoto graduated magna cum laude from the University of San Francisco and received his law degree from the University of California Berkeley School of Law.  

Wellington E. Webb, CEO of Webb International Group, works with businesses and cities on economic development projects, public relations and other consulting areas. He also is the managing director of Webb Development Group, a mixed-use real estate development firm, and board member of Alliance Development Partners Inc., a real estate development firm. A strong supporter of public service, Webb has a distinguished leadership record that spans regional, state and local levels, including election to the Colorado House of Representatives and three highly successful terms as mayor of Denver.
