Millicent
W. Workman, CPCU, CPIW, AU,
research analyst, International Risk Management Institute (IRMI) based
in Dallas, Texas. Workman serves as the editor of Practical
Risk Management.
She is a past president and treasurer of the Society’s Memphis
Chapter, and served as the CPCU Society’s 2005-2006 President.
Workman has
also served as a regional vice president, national director, and
as chairman of the Society’s Risk Management Review Task Force.
She is active with RIMS, as past president of the Memphis Chapter; and
Ole Miss Insurance Advisory Council. In recognition for her dedication
and service, Business
Insurance named Workman “Risk Manager of the Year” in 1992 and
one of the “100 Leading Women in Insurance” in 2000.
Panelists
Dr. Robert Hartwig, Ph.D., CPCU,
is president of the Insurance Information Institute. Since joining
the I.I.I. in 1998 as an economist and becoming chief economist in
2000, Dr. Hartwig has focused his work on improving understanding of
key insurance issues across all industry stakeholders including media,
consumers, insurers, producers, regulators, legislators and investors.
Hartwig previously served as director of economic research and senior
economist with the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI)
in Boca Raton, Florida, where he performed rate of return and cost of
capital modeling and testified at workers’ compensation rate hearings
in many states. He has also worked as senior economist for the Swiss
Reinsurance Group in New York and as senior statistician for the United
States Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington, D.C. He is a
member of the American Economic Association, the American Risk and Insurance
Association, the National Association of Business Economics and the CPCU
Society and serves on the board of directors of the Independent Insurance
Agents and Brokers Association of New York. In 2005 and 2006 Dr. Hartwig
served on the state of Florida’s Task Force for Long-Term Homeowners
Insurance Solutions.
Hartwig has authored and co-authored papers that have appeared in numerous
publications, including the Journal of Health Economics, the Proceedings
of the Casualty Actuarial Society, the John Liner Review (where he also
serves on the editorial board), Dossiers et Etudes (Geneva Association),
the Journal of Workers’ Compensation, Global Reinsurance, Risk & Insurance,
Insurance Day, Compensation and Benefits Review. He is also a regular
contributor to National Underwriter and many other industry trade publications.
Hartwig serves as a media spokesperson for the property/casualty insurance;
is quoted frequently in leading national publications; and appears regularly
on television..
Hartwig received his Ph.D. and Master of Science degrees in economics
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also received
a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics cum laude from the University
of Massachusetts at Amherst. He has served as an instructor at the University
of Illinois and at Florida Atlantic University.
Mark Lewis is
the general manager of IBM’s Global Insurance
Industry. He is responsible for
IBM business with insurance clients, as well as worldwide strategy; development
of skills; assets; and capabilities to better serve IBM’s global
insurance clients.
Mark previously spent
eight years managing IBM business in Financial Services, in Asia Pacific
and in the Americas. During his tenure
in Financial Services, Mark was responsible for nearly $9B annually of
IBM's business and had the opportunity to work closely with clients in
over 20 countries, primarily in Asia and the Americas. He also led the
development of numerous IBM solutions including hardware, software and
services to solve business and industry-wide problems and opportunities.
This included building and expanding numerous relationships with business
partners and unique business arrangements with clients.
Mark worked closely
with a number of senior executives and CEOs in financial institutions
to strengthen their business strategy, improve profitability, minimize
security and risk positions and enhance their business strategy aimed
at organic growth. He worked with
executives in the Federal Reserve (US) and Financial Supervisory Agency
(Japan) to address issues associated with the US and Japanese banking
systems and markets.
Mark's IBM career
spans over 30 years in various management positions and geographies
around the world. It also includes extensive time
in the services business with a specialty around outsourcing and the
formation of joint ventures in Japan. He also worked with a team
at IBM HQ to re-engineer several of IBM's key business processes.
Mark holds a Bachelor
of Science degree in Industrial Administration from Iowa State University
and an MBA in Finance from Texas Christian University. In addition,
he has studied advanced international business courses under Peter
Drucker at the Claremont Colleges in California.
