Six highly specialized courses will be offered. The CPCU Society Center for Leadership courses are developed by and for insurance professionals, and taught by industry experts. To register please use the 2008 Annual Meeting and Seminars registration form.

Leadership Opportunities with Today’s Multi-Generational Workforce

Friday, September 5 8:30 a.m. – Noon

The changes in goals, expectations and motivations of each generational group (Millennials, X-ers, Boomers and Silents) present unique opportunities for today’s leaders. You will leave this course with ideas for capitalizing upon the unique characteristics of each group and to engage and leverage them for organizational success.

 

Presenter
Rita Williams-Bogar, CPCU, ChFC, AU, is president and chief executive officer of Personal Development Solutions, LLC. She consults businesses and individuals in the areas of leadership development, coaching, ethics, and professionalism. She is a keynote speaker for industry and professional associations, and has more than 25 years of corporate experience in the insurance industry. Williams-Bogar is involved with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., the CPCU Society’s New Jersey Chapter and Bryant University’s board of trustees.

Effective Communication: Leadership Writing Skills for the Business Professional

Friday, September 5 8:30 a.m. – Noon
 

We risk our professional reputations when we fall into bad writing habits; poor communication skills diminish our intelligence in the eyes of recipients, calls into question the value of our services and makes us look careless. Through this course, you will learn how to plan, organize and deliver effective written communications. We will discuss basic grammar rules, writing styles, business reports and executive summaries. Our success relies on being able to communicate effectively!

Presenter
Jim Swan, CPCU, AIC, AIS, AIM, is currently is the country-wide auto physical damage training consultant for The Hartford Insurance Company. He began his career as a claims handler in Great Falls, Montana. Previously he served as the training and development leader for Hartford's Western Personal Lines Claim Service Center in Phoenix, AZ. Swan teaches INS, AIC, and CPCU classes and is a facilitator for the CPCU Society Center for Leadership.

Leadership and Ethics: The Power to Succeed

Friday, September 5 8:30 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.
 

Ethics greatly impacts both leaders and the organizations they run. This course will explore the traits of successful leaders and ethical persons in an effort to identify desirable, beneficial characteristics. We will also discuss how to overcome barriers in order to make ethical decisions. Developing skills to make the right choices are imperative to personal and organizational success.

Presenter
Elise M. Farnham, CPCU, ARM, AIM, CPIW, is the president of Illumine Consulting, a firm dedicated to providing experience and knowledge to the risk management and insurance communities. Farnham is a member of the ARM, AIC, and CPCU Advisory Boards and serves on the Board of Ethical Inquiry for the American Institute for CPCU. Farnham is a past president of the National Association of Insurance Women and of the CPCU Society's Atlanta Chapter.

Creative Facilitation Skills

Friday, September 5 1 – 4 p.m.

Leading groups and informational sessions is not easy! Participants will learn how to increase program attendee involvement and interest from beginning to end. Participants will gain techniques for conducting breakout sessions, dealing with difficult individuals, getting everyone engaged and managing program length.

Emotional Intelligence—Leveraging Self-Awareness for Professional Success

Friday, September 5 1 – 4:30 p.m.
 

Intrapersonal and interpersonal skills are critical components of emotional intelligence, specifically self-awareness; it is imperative that leadership programs take these issues into account. This course will allow participants to examine the link between emotional intelligence and professional competence, increase self-awareness and leverage the insights gained to strengthen individual and group results.

Leaders and Decisions—Meeting Ethical Dilemmas Head-On

Friday, September 5 1 – 4:35 p.m.
 

The decisions a leader makes every day are tough enough, so what happens when all of the answers are right?  Participants will examine four types of dilemmas that insurance leaders face and evaluate methods for resolving them.  Thought provoking case studies will be reviewed and discussed, giving attendees an opportunity to examine situation from a variety of perspectives. 

Learning how to deal with ethical issues is a key competency for today’s leaders!
