2004 Annual Meeting Begins in Los Angeles
The CPCU Societys 60th Annual Meeting and Seminars,
the premier professional development event of the P/C industry, is underway
in downtown Los Angeles at the Westin Bonaventure. More than 2,000 CPCUs
are here to enjoy three full days of keynote speeches,the AICPCUs
annual conferment, insurance education seminars, and networking receptions
that are all tied to this years theme of Reach for the Stars.
CPCUs are here from Bermuda, Bangladesh, France, Italy, Japan, and Korea!

Ben Stein Addresses
2004 Class of CPCU New Designees
The American Institute for CPCU today hosted its conferment ceremony featuring
speaker Ben Stein, an economist, journalist, writer, teacher, and award-winning
actor. More than 1,300 newly designated CPCUs heard Steins
political jokes and comments on war, retirement, and the economy. He told
the CPCU class of 2004 that theyre
getting their CPCU designation at what is probably the most critical
time in the insurance industry. Stein told the audience to remain
committed to the ethical standards that are integral to the equation
of distributing risk.

Insurance Professionals Attend Pre-Meeting National Leadership Institute
Courses
The Annual Meeting was preceded by the CPCU Societys
National Leadership Institute (NLI) courses, October 21-22, a special
pre-Annual Meeting leadership event where Society members and nonmembers
learned leadership strategies, effective communication skills, and negotiating
tactics. NLI participants enjoyed luncheon talks by CPCU Society president
Hugh B. McGowan, CPCU and Society executive vice president James R.
Marks, CAE, CPCU, AIM. They were told about two new NLI Courses, Strategic
Thinking and Strategic Planning, and the Societys
Leadership Summit, April 13-16, 2005, which will be held in Phoexnix,
Arizona.

Property and
Casualty Insurance Seminars Cover the Latest in Technical Education
The Annual
Meeting is an opportunity for CPCUs to learn about the latest important
property and casualty insurance topics and industry trends. Highlights
of todays
seminars include: Where Have All the Companies Gone?, this seminar
discussed the future of the insurance industry and gave a broad perspective
on a variety of insurance topics, including macroeconomics, regulation,
policyholders
surplus problems, bad management, and all other class-action litigation;
Commerical Property Coverage explored the new mold and terrorism
exclusions and new flood coverage endorsements; Mock Trial: Who Pays
When the Sky Falls? reviewed how lapses in good business practices
area compounded under the spotlight of litigation. This mock trial took
participants through realistic direct- and cross-examinations of a variety
of insurance professionals involved in pre- and post-loss services related
to the catastrophe.
